All American Commute

This Smithsonian Magazine Editor's Choice is one of my favorite exposure of all time. This is a 30 second shot taken prior to sunrise looking over the Memorial Bridge as rush hour traffic hurries across. I particularly like the "heartbeat" of the photography, a jogger's chestlight that appears on the right hand side of the image. NOTE: A one half stop soft GND filter was used to slightly darken the above the horion portion of this photograph. Contrast was also slightly adjusted.

Horshoe Dawn

A wide angle photograph of horshoe canyon just after sunrise as first light hits the western horizon, but has yet to enter the canyon. NOTE: A 1 stop soft GND filter was used to darken the sky above the horizon.

Sandstone Reflection

A newly formed, and very temporary, pond reflects the late evening sky and sandstone colors in Coyote Buttes South wilderness area. NOTE A polorazing filter was used at time of exposure.

Reflective Wave

Early morning light hits the upper portion of a wave formation as it is reflected in a temporary pool of water. NOTE: A two stop soft GND filter was used to darken the portion of the photo where directed sunlight hits the sandstone.

Rainbow Wave

Reflective dawn light illuminates the southwest portion of The Wave in Coyote Buttes North permit area. NOTE: No major edits were made to this photo. Contrast was adjusted.

Second Pink

Early morning reflective light illumates The Second Wave formation in the Coyote Buttes North permit area. The sequence of events that formed this formation through geologic time would take an entire book to explain (or so I've been told). NOTE: No major edits made to this photograph in post.

Blastoff at Shiprock

A long exposure, 5 minute, photograph of Shiprock taken at astronomical dawn as a set of whispy clouds flow over the formation. The light source for this photograph was the light of the full moon. Note: A one stop GND filter was applied to the below the horizon portion of this photograph to achieve the desired light balance above and below the horizon.

Shiprock Dawn

First light falls on Shiprock and the grasslands surrounding it. NOTE: A polarizing filter was used to deepen the colors of the sky.

Chimney Rock Rainbow

Evening light falls over Chimeny Rock at Ghost Ranch, Abiqui Lake, as a vertical rainbow formed just west of Black Mesa. NOTE: A minus one stop GND filter was applied to the sky above the horizon to achieve the observed light balance between the above and below the horizon light levels.
